Polaris and Arcturus: How to Find Them Using the Stars of Ursa Major

Constellations

Far from city lights in dark moonless night if you can see a faint star very close to the second star of the Big Dipper handle, then you have a good eyesight. These two stars called Mizar and Alcor.

The dipper of Ursa Major handle points to the bright red star Arcturus.

Also the two rightmost stars of Big Dipper point to Polaris, the star of the constellation Ursa Minor.

As you can see in this video, about 73 thousand years later Polaris will become an optical double star. And 100 thousand years later there will be another star between Mizar and Alcor.

See with subtitles.

The video was made using own software. Information about the stars is taken from the Hipparcos catalogue.

The track Eternal Garden by Dan Henig sounds in this video.
