Hot Venus: What is Hidden Under its Clouds

Planets

This video tells about the planet Venus and its motion around the Sun. It also clearly shows the trajectory of Venus against the background of stars and its orbit around the Sun when observed from Earth.

The surface of Venus is always completely hidden from the outside observer by a dense atmosphere and clouds. But in this video we will briefly look under its clouds, see its red hot surface and discover a very slow axial rotation of the planet. Moreover, the rotation of Venus is carried out in the opposite direction compared to other planets of the Solar system (with the exception of Uranus). The upper atmosphere of Venus rotates very rapidly in the direction from east to west.

Venus rotates around the Sun faster than around its axis. To make a revolution around the Sun, Venus needs almost 225 Earth days, and around the axis – as much as 243 days! The superposition of these two rotations leads to the fact that the solar day on Venus lasts almost 117 Earth days. The orbit of Venus is even closer to a perfect circle than the orbit of the Earth, but at the same time, it is noticeably inclined to the plane of the ecliptic.

Venus is the brightest object in the sky, excluding the Sun and Moon. Due to the fact that Venus is located closer to the Sun than the Earth, it never moves further from the Sun than 48 degrees. However, this is quite a large angle, and the dazzling Venus can be admired for a long time in the evening after sunset or in the morning for a long time before sunrise. When observed with strong binoculars or a small telescope, you can see that Venus is gradually changing its phases. Like the Moon, it can look like a full disk, and as a thin sickle.

Modeling and rendering were performed by author of AstroTubo channel using own software. The calculations took into account the mutual influence of the Sun, all the planets of the Solar System and the Moon on each other. Relativistic effects were also taken into account in the calculation.
