Asteroid 2023 NT1 was Spotted too Late

Asteroids

On July 15, 2023, the new asteroid 2023 NT₁ was discovered. When scientists calculated its orbit, it turned out that two days earlier it had almost collided with the Earth. The diameter of the asteroid is estimated at several tens of meters. If its fall had occurred in a densely populated area, millions of people could have died.

In July 2023, the asteroid 2023 NT₁ flew to Earth from the direction of the Sun, so it was not detected in a timely manner. On July 13, 2023, it passed the Earth 4 times closer than the Moon. At 10:13 UTC, the distance between the asteroid and the Earth surface was about 94 thousand km. The asteroid’s velocity relative to the Earth at that moment was about 11 km/s.

The power of the collision explosion will be comparable to the power of the explosion that occurred during the Tunguska event in 1908.

Modeling and rendering were performed by author of AstroTubo channel using own software. The calculations took into account the mutual influence of the Sun, all the planets of the Solar System, the Moon and the asteroid on each other. Relativistic effects were also taken into account in the calculation.
