In the previous animation, its orbit relative to the Sun and trajectory relative to Jupiter were shown in detail. Its trajectory relative to the L4 Lagrange point of the Sun–Jupiter system was also shown. This video also shows the trajectory of the asteroid Hektor relative to the Lagrange point, but in more detail. The asteroid path is displayed over a much longer time interval to show how complex it is.

The trajectory looks complicated exactly relative to the Lagrange point. In fact, Hektor orbits the Sun in an almost circular orbit inclined to the plane of the ecliptic. The asteroid trajectory seems chaotic, but at the same time, some patterns can be seen in its motion. The trajectory is not closed even over a very, very long time interval. But at the same time, Hektor, in the process of his motion relative to the point L4, does not go beyond a certain area. Other Trojan asteroids of Jupiter have similar trajectories, of which there are more than six thousand.

Watch the video with subtitles

Go to video

Modeling and rendering were performed by author of this publication using own software.
