Aldebaran is one of the first stars to have its proper motion detected. It was discovered by Edmond Halley in 1718 after comparing with Ptolemy star maps. This became possible due to the fact that Aldebaran is now moving slowly against the background of a slightly more distant scattered cluster of Hyades.
