In the third part of the video about the asteroid Kamoʻoalewa, which is a quasi-satellite of the Earth, it is proposed to look at it from an unusual point of view. The asteroid will be placed in the center of the coordinate system, which will allow you to see how the Earth is moving relative to it. In fact, this trajectory is similar to that of an asteroid relative to the planet. But due to the presence of the Moon near the Earth, the motion of our planet relative to Kamoʻoalewa looks especially fascinating.
The first part of the video, published in April 2023, showed Kamoʻoalewa trajectory relative to the Earth at the present time. It explains in detail why the trajectory looks so complicated and is practically closed at the same time. The second part, released in February 2024, showed the evolution of its orbit over several centuries. In it, you can clearly see how the trajectory slowly but continuously deforms over time.
According to recent studies, the asteroid Kamoʻoalewa may be a piece of the Moon. This fragment could have been ejected into space during the formation of one of the Moon’s large impact craters several million years ago. The study suggested that this crater may be the crater of Giordano Bruno.
In this video, you can observe a simulated asteroid belt. Each moving dot on the screen is one of the 83,000 largest asteroids. And each of these points moves along a calculated trajectory corresponding to the actual orbit of the asteroid.
Modeling and rendering were performed by author of this video using own software. The calculations took into account the mutual influence of the Sun, all the planets of the Solar System, the Moon and the asteroid on each other. Relativistic effects were also taken into account in the calculation. Throughout part of this video, the sizes of celestial bodies are shown to be greatly exaggerated compared to the distances between them.
